CAROLINE BATEMAN / green 01

Loving cup, double scroll handles, dark green slip ground with sgraffito decoration.

Front of cup shows the Howard family crest and part of the inscription
“Loyal Henry Howard Toujours” which runs around the centre in a band.

Caroline Bateman née Howard was the daughter of Henry Howard, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, and niece
of
George Howard, 6th Earl of Carlisle, whose family seat was Castle Howard, Yorkshire.

The inscription is presumed to be a reference by Caroline to her late father,
