Tobacciana

  • The Benthall Pottery Company produced smoking-related items, particularly jars for pipe tobacco and cigarettes, and also matchstrikes.

  • Tobacco jars are known with an impressed mark on the underside of the lid for the tobacco pipe works of William Southorn & Co., Broseley. The manufacture of clay tobacco pipes in the Benthall and Broseley area was a well established ceramic industry, dating from the late 1600s. By the 19th and 20th centuries, William Southorn & Co. had become one of the largest manufacturers in Britain.
