Shropshire Historical Pageant plate,1934 (Comus), blue

Transfer-printed plate made by Adams Pottery, Stoke-on-Trent, for the Benthall Pottery Company, blue version.

The plate was made to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the first performance in 1634, at 
Ludlow Castle, Shropshire, of John Milton’s Masque of “Comus".

“Comus” was performed at Ludlow Castle during the Shropshire Historical Pageant, 2nd – 7th July, 1934, and this plate, with its striking design by Gertrude Hermes (1901–83), was produced for this event.
